Its goal is to foster AI literacy and implementation through targeted innovation and experimentation.<\/p>\n<h2>About the Programme<\/h2>\n<p>This nine-month programme is led by the <strong>JournalismAI team<\/strong>, an initiative of <strong>Polis<\/strong>, the journalism think-tank at the <strong>London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)<\/strong>, with support from the Google News Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>Following the success of the first cohort, the second edition of the Innovation Challenge continues efforts to strengthen AI literacy, implementation, and experimentation in the news industry.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Can Apply?<\/h2>\n<p>The programme is targeted at <strong>small and medium-sized news publishers (10\u2013200 personnel)<\/strong> who are already exploring the possibilities of AI technologies.<\/p>\n<p>This year, up to <strong>12 organisations<\/strong> will be supported to use AI technologies for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhancing audience intelligence<\/li>\n<li>Driving revenue growth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Examples of AI Applications<\/h2>\n<p>Publishers could explore:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Subscriptions, memberships, and donations<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Dynamic paywall strategies<\/li>\n<li>Churn prediction and prevention<\/li>\n<li>Personalised products or recommendations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>New B2B revenue streams<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Premium subscription-based data insight services<\/li>\n<li>Mining and structuring premium content and audience data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Funding Details<\/h2>\n<p>Grants will be awarded as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>8 projects<\/strong> \u2192 US $50,000 each<\/li>\n<li><strong>4 projects<\/strong> \u2192 US $100,000 each<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applicants must indicate the amount they are applying for in the application form.<\/p>\n<p>Funding covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personnel costs directly related to project delivery<\/li>\n<li>Engineering costs<\/li>\n<li>Purchase\/licensing of equipment, tools, hardware, software, and other assets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: Funding cannot be used for general overhead costs.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility &amp; Selection<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Open to <strong>small and medium-sized publishers (10\u2013200 personnel)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Consideration for projects delivered in <strong>local languages<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Focus on citizens of all ages, in both <strong>urban and rural communities<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Applications must be submitted in <strong>English<\/strong> via the provided online form<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Info Sessions<\/h2>\n<p>Virtual information sessions will be held to answer questions about the programme:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tuesday, 18 November 2025 \u2014 7:30 AM GMT<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wednesday, 19 November 2025 \u2014 3:00 PM GMT<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tuesday, 25 November 2025 \u2014 9:00 AM GMT<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Wednesday, 26 November 2025 \u2014 5:00 PM GMT<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Registrations close one day prior to each session.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Application Process &amp; Timeline<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Submit applications via the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScJMgg8c8uUxb4MfexvLhpCpM_VKkmKDVMEMPreGQwVx4n03Q\/viewform\"><strong>Google Form<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Applications must be in <strong>English<\/strong> and submitted before the deadline.<\/li>\n<li>Once submitted, applications cannot be edited.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants will receive an <strong>email confirmation<\/strong> upon submission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For preparation, a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/13SYvLdJxXw6qpjxieP5XyFb78Aub_TfqTpmxW5QxhQ0\/edit?tab=t.0\"><strong>Google Doc<\/strong><\/a> with all application questions is available.
