Since its launch in 2012, the IRF has served as a vital platform for enhancing the visibility and quality of independent African peacebuilding research, contributing significantly to regional and global discourse, and making knowledge accessible to policymakers, practitioners, and research centers of excellence across Africa and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2026, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">up to nine (9) fellowships<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> will be awarded, with each fellowship offering a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">maximum of $12,000<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> to support fieldwork, analysis, and knowledge dissemination.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\nProgram Overview<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The APDD Individual Research Fellowship supports research that addresses pressing peacebuilding challenges across the African continent. Fellows are expected to produce research-based knowledge that influences scholarship, policy, and practice while integrating African perspectives into regional and global debates.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Key components of the program include:<\/span><\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Thought Leadership<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fellows commit to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">six (6) months of field-based research<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">three (3) months of analysis and writing<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, spanning <\/span><span class=\"s2\">July 2026 to March 2027<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Research outputs contribute directly to the improvement of peacebuilding scholarship, policy, and practice on the continent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fellows\u2019 work is designed to inform evidence-based policymaking and advance regional and global peacebuilding discourse.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Workshops<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two <\/span><span class=\"s2\">mandatory APDD workshops<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> are scheduled in <\/span><span class=\"s2\">July 2026<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">January 2027<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> across different African regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Workshops offer opportunities to refine research design, methodology, and focus, and to present preliminary findings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fellows learn to make their research accessible through publications, policy briefs, and digital platforms while networking with peers, senior academics, and practitioners.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">African Scholarship and Knowledge Production<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fellows contribute to the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">APDD Working Paper series<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">African Peacebuilding Policy Review and Analysis<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, and online platforms such as <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Kujenga Amani<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Facebook<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">X<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Opportunities exist to publish in <\/span><span class=\"s2\">peer-reviewed journals<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, books, essays, blogs, opinion articles, and podcasts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Participants gain skills and knowledge that advance careers in academia or professional peacebuilding practice.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\">Community, Professional Development, and Networking<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Fellows join a network of active African scholars and practitioners, amplifying African perspectives on global peacebuilding discussions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mentorship is provided by experienced senior scholars, alongside peer-to-peer learning and collaboration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s3\"><br \/>\nEligibility Criteria<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the 2026 IRF:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Citizenship:<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Must be an African citizen residing in an African country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Academic Applicants:<\/span>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Must hold a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">full-time faculty or research position<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> at an African university or research institution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Must have obtained a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">PhD no earlier than January 2016<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Applicants without a PhD by June 2026 will not be prioritized as academics.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Policy Analysts and Practitioners:<\/span>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Must work at a regional or sub-regional institution, government agency, NGO, media, or civil society organization based in Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Must hold at least a <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Master\u2019s degree obtained before January 2021<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Must have <\/span><span class=\"s2\">at least five years of research or professional experience<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> in
